The New Rules
- When it comes to the working environment, what you do is more important than your title.
- You don't have to "go to the office" to work anymore. Increasingly, technology is making being there optional.
- At work, chances are you don't sit in one place for very long.
- There is a growing trend among employees to use different chairs throughout the day, i.e., the same chair is used by several different people.
- Group and team settings are becoming increasingly important. There are ways to arrange a workplace to accommodate teamwork and individual work.
- There is no single model for what the working environment should be.
- Each company is unique and has its’ own work processes.
- We're moving from a focus on efficiency – that is, getting work done quickly and cheaply, to a focus on effectiveness – or achieving the outcomes required to meet business objectives.
- To stay competitive, we must control costs without compromising efficiency.

The new questions
- Have we studied our organization and work processes?
- Are our office plans based on what we need to support our work processes – or on traditions of status and rank?
- Are we building streets, villages and schools – or another outdated version of a white-collar factory?
- Are we supporting the work of our people wherever it is performed?
- Are we giving groups and teams – as well as individuals – the settings they need to work effectively?
- Are employees involved in the planning process? Are we ready to explain to them how to use their new workspaces efficiently?
- What messages are we sending to our internal and external customers by the way we plan and furnish our offices?
- Is our ultimate goal to cut costs or improve our company's efficiency?
